K9 Blu Busts Two on Felony Drug Charges

One of the Casper Police Department’s newest K9s assisted in two felony arrests yesterday.

Shortly before 10:00pm on Monday, January 6th, 2020, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in Casper. Two adults from Colorado were inside. Both claimed to be in Casper visiting acquaintances. With their training and expertise, officers were quickly able to identify that additional resources were needed to assist with this call.

K9 Blu arrived a short time later. After conducting a free air sniff of the vehicle, K9 Blu indicated the presence of a controlled substance inside.

A search of the vehicle revealed numerous drug paraphernalia items along with 2.3 ounces of methamphetamine. Officers also obtained a search warrant for the suspects’ hotel room where they found additional evidence of illegal controlled substances and paraphernalia.

Both suspects were arrested and booked on multiple charges to include two felony recommended charges of possession of a controlled substance and one felony recommended charge of possession of meth with the intent to deliver.

“Our K9 Unit provides a resource to our community that allows us to get illegal drugs off our streets and put those individuals who plan on distributing those drugs behind bars,” said Casper Police Sergeant Seth Wheeler. “We have no tolerance for anyone carrying, using or planning to distribute illegal drugs in Casper.”

K9 Blu joined the Casper Police Department during the summer of 2019. Since then, he and his new K9 handler have gone through hundreds of hours of training and scenarios.

“K9 Blu has a lot of years ahead of him to serve our community,” said K9 handler Officer Michael Hughes. “I’m proud of the work he’s done so far and am looking forward to fighting crime alongside him in the future.”

The Casper Police Department is dedicated to the protection and safety of our community through the highest standards of professionalism in police services.
