In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. In Casper, we honor Peace Officer Memorial Day on May 15th with a ceremonial lowering of the flags in front of the Hall of Justice and City Hall. This brief, but meaningful ceremony remembers those Casper Police Officers lost in the line of duty. Officers wear black mourning bands over their badges and blue C.O.P.S. ribbons on the antennas of their vehicles to show support and remembrance of those law enforcement officers who die in the line of duty every year.
In 2021, the Casper Police Department held our inaugural Police Week Block Party to thank the citizens of Casper for their support of our officers. With over 1,000 community members in attendance, the officers felt every bit of support Casper had to offer – which makes Casper the best place in the world to serve. The Department gives out free blue support ribbons to the community to wear during Police Week. Citizens can share their support by uploading photos using the hashtag #IsupportCPD.
